A biography is not a compressed resume. It is a positioning document, and most are written as if it were the former.
The standard executive biography recites roles in reverse order, adds a list of credentials, and ends with a sentence about board seats or education. It is accurate, complete and almost entirely without effect.
A biography that works does three things a resume cannot: it states what the leader is known for, it gives the reader a narrative arc they can repeat to someone else, and it calibrates tone to the audience — a nomination committee, an investor deck and a conference programme each require a different register.
The test of a strong biography is whether a third party could introduce you from it without editing. Most fail that test, which is why so many introductions get rewritten at the last minute.
