Handled early and handled well, the compensation conversation signals seniority. Handled poorly, it ends processes that were otherwise going your way.
Executive compensation is a structured conversation — base, bonus, equity, incentives, notice, restrictive covenants — and senior interviewers judge candidates partly by how fluently they navigate it. Hesitation or over-eagerness are both read as signals.
The sound position is informed and unhurried: know the market range for the role and level, state your expectations as a considered range rather than a single number, and connect the question to the scope of the mandate rather than treating it as a negotiation about you personally.
Where the question arrives too early, it is entirely acceptable to note that you would want to understand the full scope before fixing numbers — provided you do so with composure. Seniority shows in the calibration, not the figure.
